Although he had heard about CardScan from friends, Colin hadn’t actually pursued the idea of buying one until he happened by a display at his local office supply store about five years ago. Then, suddenly, what seemed like an intriguing idea became a necessity. He bought a CardScan Executive that day and has been using it every day since (although he recently upgraded to the most current version). He says, "I originally thought it would be a help. How to manage 3,500 close relationships.
To get started, Colin scanned every single business card in his possession into a CardScan file. (Today he adds approximately 10
to 20 new cards every week.) At the same time, he transcribed any notes he had into the Notes field of each contact record. This gave him ready access to everything from a client’s nickname and hobbies to details about the company’s current coverage.

Next, Colin added new Categories to his files. He quickly determined that he needed categories based on the contact’s type of business (such as “marinas”) as well as some based on special interests (like “boaters” or “golfer”). He assigned as many categories to each contact as he thought helpful.

Now he had a complete reference on how to contact everyone on his list, as well as the important details about both the person and the company. By simply using the one-step sorting feature, he is able to pull up lists of similar contacts as well as each individual contact.

The next step was to make the information accessible no matter where he was or what electronic device he might be using (and Colin has a lot of electronic devices). To make certain every device he uses has the same information at all times, he relies on CardScan’s automatic synchronizing feature.

By anyone’s measure, Colin is successful. Over the last five years, since he’s been using CardScan to help him organize, maintain and access important contact information, he’s been either the number one, two or three producer in his company every year. What’s more, his record is so admirable, colleagues and acquaintances are constantly asking for his advice managing their own business. And though he describes himself as "not a product guy at all," he never fails to credit CardScan with much of his success.
